Forgiving father whose 16-year-old daughter m*rd£red her mother and two brothers after row over boyfriend says he's desperate to live long enough to see her walk out of jail. In 2008, 16-year-old Erin Caffey convinced her boyfriend to br*tally murd£r her entire family in their sleep after her parents banned them from being together. He and an accomplice broke into the house and went on a horrifically bl00dy k!ll!ng spree while she waited in the car. They sh0t her father multiple times before d£c*pitating his wife with a sword, sh0t 8-year-old Tyler in the face, and took turns hacking 13-year-old Matthew to death with the sword before looting the house and setting it on fire. Terry Caffey was the sole survivor when attackers murdered his wife and two young sons on the night of March 1 2008. Caffey’s 16-year-old daughter, Erin, was then discovered to have orchestrated the slaughter of her entire family after her parents told her she could no longer see the boy she was dating. N...

"Mountain of God".

Image
"Mountain of God". Named Ol Doinyo Lengai – meaning “Mountain of God” in the local Maasai language, the volcano in Tanzania is the weirdest on Earth.  It is the only active volcano known to erupt natro-carbonatite lava, not the usual melts based on silica. Its lava is of unusual black color what results from its composition and the comparably low temperature at which it erupts.  While basalt based lava erupting from volcanos in Hawaii reach scorching 1100 degrees Celsius, the Mountain of God’s cough appears rather cool at about 510 degrees Celsius.  Once the black lava gets in contact with moisture, it turns white. Looking at Ol Doinyo Lengai with unsuspecting eyes, you might think its peak is covered in snow, while in fact it is black lava turned white.

In ancient Greece, women were forbidden to study medicine for several years until someone broke the law.

Do You Know ❓ In ancient Greece, women were forbidden to study medicine for several years until someone broke the law. Born in 300 BC, Agnodice cut her hair and entered Alexandria medical school dressed as a man. While walking the streets of Athens after completing her medical education, she heard the cries of a woman in labour. However, the woman did not want Agnodice to touch her although she was in severe pain, because she thought Agnodice was a man. Agnodice proved that she was a woman by removing her clothes without anyone seeing and helped the woman deliver her baby. The story would soon spread among the women and all the women who were sick began to go to Agnodice. The male doctors grew envious and accused Agnodice, whom they thought was male, of seducing female patients. At her trial, Agnodice, stood before the court and proved that she was a woman but this time, she was sentenced to death for studying medicine and practicing medicine as a woman. Women revolted at the sen...

Mirror hand syndrome is an extremely rare syndrome that has only been diagnosed 100 times worldwide.

Mirror hand syndrome is an extremely rare syndrome that has only been diagnosed 100 times worldwide. It is also called Ulnar Dimelia. It does not simply mean that you have a few too many fingers, because that happens quite often. Affected people have a second hand on their wrist that mirrors the movements of the first hand. The disease does not seem to be hereditary and could be caused by a genetic mutation. Unfortunately, this is only a hypothesis, as no one knows exactly what causes the rare hand disease. The hands often join at the palm and are generally symmetrical. The affected person's hand looks like it is doubled, and there may be a cleft in the palm where the hands come together. The extra fingers are connected to extra bones that run along the wearer's wrist and sometimes extend to the elbow. The condition was first described in 1587, but since that discovery, only 72 cases have been documented in the medical literature, and some cases may have gone unnoticed in und...

Thirty-two frightening snapshots of a hanging. And no one knew who the victims were – until now.

Image
An unknown photographer captured the hanging of Ferenc Szalasi, known as the “Hungarian Hitler.” He and three others were executed on March 12, 1946. Thirty-two frightening snapshots of a hanging. And no one knew who the victims were – until now. The 32 black-and-white snapshots were like frames from a disturbing home movie —  four men marched to the gallows and hanged one by one. There’s a large crowd of onlookers present. Many are in military uniforms. Two priests accompany the condemned and raise crucifixes for them to kiss moments before execution. The scene is the stone courtyard of a big brick building where people are looking out glass-less windows and thronging the rooftop. Many bystanders have cameras. In one picture, a doctor with a stethoscope checks a victim for a heartbeat after he’s been hanged. When my colleague, copy editor Panfilo Garcia, brought the pictures to me and the Retropolis desk, he wondered whether anyone would like them as a donatio...

Comfort women”

Image
"Comfort women” Comfort women”  refers to the system of sexual slavery created and controlled by the Imperial Japanese government between 1932 and 1945. It is the largest case of government-sponsored human trafficking and sexual slavery in modern history. Many scholars have argued that the term comfort women, a euphemism coined by the Japanese military, obscures the gravity of the crime. While the authors agree that “military sexual slaves” is a much more accurate and appropriate phrase, we use the term comfort women in this article to refer specifically to the victims of the Japanese military’s sexual slavery system during World War II and “on which decades of international debate, historical research, and legal discourses are mounted,” following the earlier scholarly works. Estimates vary as to how many women were involved, but most scholars agree that hundreds of thousands of women were victimized, and that includes girls as young as twelve years old. A majority of the wo...
